ENGLISH LANGUAGE

When a young child joins the school, our first objective in terms of the English Language is to expand his /her vocabulary especially if English is not his / her first language. This is usually done through activities such as:

Reading

The phonetic method is implemented actively at Young Thinkers. The children are introduced to the sound of letters as soon as they have settled in school. The sounds are not introduced alphabetically but instead through the sequence that has been set by us. The stages of introducing reading through this method are:

  1. Sound of letters
  2. Initial sounds
  3. Ending sounds
  4. Middle sounds
  5. Building and reading three-letter phonetic words
  6. Reading phrases
  7. Building and reading longer phonetic words
  8. Reading phrases and sentences
  9. Reading phonetic books
  10. Phonograms
  11. Reading books
  12. Grammar

The first five stages are the most crucial steps and often take the longest time for the children to understand and be competent in. Once they understand the concept of blending, it is usually easier and they will be more confident in their ‘reading’.
