SENSORIAL
Dr. Maria Montessori designed these materials and exercises to help refine the child’s senses. She believed that manual activity using the hands is an important part in the intellectual development of the child. The child learns best when he uses his hands as this helps develop his / her concentration.
The senses trained are:
- Sight - To train visual discrimination
- Auditory - To refine the sense of hearing
- Olfactory - To refine the sense of smell
- Gustatory - To refine the sense of taste
- Tactile - To refine the sense of touch
- Sterognostic - To refine the muscular sense
New words and concepts of each material are introduced through the three period lessons.
- First period - To introduce names or concepts
- Second period - Enables the teacher to see if the child recognises the concepts introduced.
- Third period - Enables the teacher to see if the child is able to name the concepts introduced.
